LGB Chairs
Alan McPherson, Charlton Primary School
Chair of Governors
I have been a governor at Charlton Primary School since January 2016 and was elected Chair of Governors in October 2018. My granddaughter is a pupil at the school. I am a regular volunteer at Forest School and do some gardening around the school.
I am retired from full-time employment, having over 40 years international HR experience primarily in energy companies. I am a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development.
I became a governor with the intention of making a difference to the life chances of children. I had no expectations of what it meant to be a school governor and have found it to be a rewarding and challenging experience. There is always more to do.
Each governor is encouraged to take a lead role for an aspect of school governance. I have taken a general lead on HR matters including a review of school policies, staff development and the appraisal process. I have also undertaken the safeguarding lead role since September 2016 and have attended external training courses, bringing back questions and observations to the school.
An important task for the LGB is to provide strategic clarity and direction, and I have worked with the Head Teacher and the LGB to develop a vision and strategy for Charlton to become a top performing school. I believe that a top performing school deserves a top performing governing body and continue to work with Governors to achieve that. I have developed my knowledge by attending the NGA Development for Chairs programme.
Charlton is one of eight schools forming the Vale Academy Trust and I attend meetings of Chairs of Governors from the other schools, as well as Governor development sessions, to share knowledge and best practice. I participate in VAT working groups.
I am hugely optimistic about the bright future for Charlton, the LGB, the staff and mostly for the pupils. We have a real opportunity together to make a difference to children’s lives and futures.

Rich Evans, Millbrook Primary School
Chair of Governors
I am delighted to be the board appointed chair of governors for Millbrook school.
I have lived in Oxfordshire for 25 years having grown up in the West Midlands. After 17 years in banking and finance, I have been teaching business and economics for 12 years. As an experienced teacher and Assistant Headteacher responsible for the quality of teaching, I am passionate about high quality learning and the impact this can have on student progress. I was the first member of my family to go to University and the confidence and challenge inspired by my teachers was a key part of this. I am keen all students, regardless of background, reach their potential enabling them to pursue their passions and make ambitious choices for their future.
